First State Bank

Most people believed their money was safe
Until 1929
After that the Great Depression
Was not that far behind.

Answer:  First State Bank of Montgomery

The First State Bank of Montgomery is located at 211 Liberty and is one of the first banks in Texas.  The bank was chartered in December 1906 and began operating in another building.  The building was completed in 1908 and remains the oldest existing commercial building in this area.

It was the town's only bank and served the cotton farmers in the area.  The safe was stolen once and the vault still has scars from the robbery.  The bank crashed financially during the Great Depression and fell victim to a voluntary liquidation in 1934.  It offered usual bank provision but also provided insurance.  The bank is now the home of Retreat Hill Winery.

Well....we just missed him again! They rebuilt this bank to a winery! I saw some drops of wine leading outside, so I think Gus got a little wild.  I hope Gus is having as much fun as I am learning all about Montgomery!  The employees inside gave me  another riddle - let's go!!
