Shelton Smith House

Answer:  Shelton-Smith House

The Shelton-Smith House located at 811 Caroline was built in the 1850's by John E. Shelton.  Shelton, a master craftsman, built the main portion of the house around 1858 for his friend Thomas W. Smith.  Smith became a major cigar manufacturer in this county.  A grand-daughter added the dormers during remodeling in 1922.  The Smith Family owned this house until 1924.

In 2000, Richard and March Eckhart purchased the property, restored it, and then opened it to the public in 2006 as the Caroline House.  The slave quarters still stand.  It was originally a one room box house with dirt floors and a front and back porch.
